The 10th International Orpheum Music Festival ends on a successful note
With the 2nd soloist concert on 23 September 2011, this year's International Orpheum Music Festival for the Advancement of Young Soloists reached a successful culmination. 3,400 listeners attended the three concerts making up this 10th holding of the festival with which the Orpheum Foundation simultaneously celebrated its 20th anniversary. The concerts were notable for eight very different musical temperaments that lent a different character to each of the evenings. The Orpheum Public Award for example, was given over entirely to the spirit of Mozart whereby the audience was able to listen to three different interpretations of the composer's work. The 1st soloist concert was very diverse from the musical standpoint, while the 2nd soloist concert celebrated Tchaikovsky in all his Russian passion. Yet it is first and foremost the interplay of young musicians with renowned conductors and orchestras that make the Orpheum concerts such an exceptional experience and musically express the idea that has underpinned the 74 advancement concerts over the last 20 years.

Behzod Abduraimov wins the Orpheum Public Award for Mozart
On 18 September 2011, the Orpheum Public Award for Mozart took place for the 5th time - three soloists played three late Mozart piano concertos after which the audience was given the task of casting its votes in favour of the most appealing interpretation. This year, it decided in favour of the 21-year-old Uzbek Behzod Abduraimov and his interpretation of Mozart's piano concerto No. 20 in D minor, K 466. It was a close competition, however, with convincing performances also from both Anna Fedorova from the Ukraine and Ishay Shaer from Israel. Orpheum would like to congratulate all three soloists on an interesting and wonderful concert!

Karen Geoghegan, an exceptional musician making her first appearance on the continent.
Since her debut at the Proms with the BBC Philharmonic in 2009, Karen Geoghegan has been in demand as a soloist in Great Britain. She has already received many prizes during her years of study; on completion of her studies she was even awarded "Her Majesty the Queen's Commendation for Excellence". The 21-year-old bassoonist is now making her first appearance on the European mainland during the Orpheum Music Festival 2011. Aiming for nothing less than to bring the bassoon to a wide audience as a solo instrument. She discovered the instrument purely by chance at the age of 12. A musician was needed for the school orchestra, someone who could already play an instrument and would thus be able to get to grips with the bassoon quickly. And that's how Karen Geoghegan found her perfect instrument - "comfortable and natural to play" as she puts it herself.
